The Patterson Heights and Prominence Point housing market started off as acreages. Originally known as Broadcast Hill due to an imposing transmission tower located in the area, the land was mainly owned by members of the Patterson family who lent their name to the area. The land was annexed to Calgary in 1956, but it was not until 1983 that Patterson Heights was officially established and real estate development began. Work then continued through the 90's. In 1988, Patterson Heights was home to the Media Village of the XV Olympic Winter Games. That village has subsequently been converted and now consists of condominiums and apartments.
The condominiums converted from the Media Village of the XV Olympic Winter Games made up some of the first residences in the area. Further developments were mostly focused on single family homes, a number of townhouses and some apartment complexes. There is a fairly strong rental market in the area that amounts for about 23% of the housing. Buyers can find affordable Stanley Park townhouses and condos in Patterson Heights, while at the same time there are a number of executive detached homes that easily sell for 7 figures.
