If you're looking for that rural lifestyle but want to be close to the city, there's a wide radius around the outskirts of Calgary in which to look. The line which defines the city and the municipal districts which surround it is the largest municipal border in Canada. The types of communities outside Calgary are very diverse. There are cul-de-sacs with homes on large lots so you can have the company of neighbours and a piece of land that's easy to care for. Larger cul-de-sacs and country roads have that neighbourhood feel. Yet you'll have several acres and a home with enough space for a horse or two. You can spread out in a lovely home situated on 10 or more acres. And if a hobby farm, dog kennel, equestrian centre, cattle operation or even a canola field is in your future, you'll find it in our acreage and country listings.
Acreage & Country Properties South of Calgary
To the south of Calgary is the Municipal District of Foothills, also known as Foothills County. This district is 3,600 square kilometres in size. The topography ranges from prairie and river valley to rolling foothills and creeks, with the ever-present Rocky Mountains holding court in the distance. There's no getting around the fact that this is cowboy country and when you drive the grid or gravel roads you'll always have a friendly wave from passer-by in a pick-up truck.
To the north, east and west is the Municipal District of Rocky View, or Rocky View County. It surrounds three sides of the city like a horse shoe. Certainly the majority of acreage and country listings are found in this district. Rocky View has flat, prairie terrain to the east and north, and more rugged land with coniferous trees and glacial rocks to the west.
If a full-out quarter section is what you're looking for, the Municipal District of Wheatland is a bit further to the east where you'll find raw land with services to the road, grain farms with beautiful homes and outbuildings fully serviced. You'll find plenty of very private land less than an hour's drive to the city.
The rural areas just outside the city limits provide the much needed space for a custom, ultra-luxury home. Unique high-end residences have been built taking full advantage of the wide open space or rustic hillside with mountain views. Acreage and country home owners enjoy the city amenities, yet the municipal district in which they live will provide police, fire and EMS. There are recreation centres, organized sports teams, schools and churches without having to come to the city.
