Airdrie was a railway town for many years until Highway 2, now the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, was twinned. This community, with its lower prices and slower lifestyle, became attractive to buyers looking for affordable options during Calgary's building boom in the 1970's. Airdrie has several fine communities built during this time period, all within walking distance of schools, shopping, services and downtown social life. Since 2010, a large number of master planned communities have come into existence in Airdrie, built by some of Alberta's most highly regarded builders and community planners. Downtown Airdrie offers a library, the historic Roxy Theatre and festival space as the city places great emphasis on a vibrant arts community. In addition to the quaint shops downtown, Airdrie has many shopping centres and a full complement of medical services, dentists, physiotherapists and chiropractors. The Didsbury Hospital is 15 minutes north of Airdrie and there are shorter wait times there than at similar facilities in Calgary.
