Strathmore Housing Market
Strathmore real estate is comprised of relatively newer homes in a variety of price ranges. There are manufactured homes for sale on both leased lots and purchased. Bungalows, split-levels and two-storey are the primary home types with and without front-drive garages. A large estate-sized home with 2,000 to 2,800 square feet is much more reasonably priced in Strathmore than in the city. There are many new subdivisions with show homes for young families to choose from in Strathmore. The area around Strathmore also has acreages, hobby farms and lots of land appropriately priced from $1 million up depending on your needs.
A relatively new community, approximately 54% of all residential dwellings in Strathmore have been built since 1996. There is pride of ownership in this well-planned community, where 82% of homes are owner-occupied. Single-family detached homes represent 64.5% of all dwellings. There are very few apartment condos in Strathmore.
Living in Strathmore
In the last 20 years a growing number of commuters have made their homes in Strathmore. Homes are noticeably less expensive in this community and Strathmore is an excellent option for those who prefer a small town lifestyle. Some move to Strathmore to escape the city and some have come to the Calgary area from a small town and prefer to stay in one. The economy of Strathmore is based on agriculture and natural gas. Situated 40 km east of Calgary in the Rural Municipality of Wheatland, Strathmore is a 45-minute commute from downtown Calgary along the four-lane Trans-Canada Highway. The town has doubled in size in the last 20 years, and to the delight of those who make their home there, municipal services and amenities have kept pace. Strathmore has ample recreational facilities, plus a hospital, schools and shopping.
Strathmore Community Amenities
Strathmore offers an excellent quality of life with a local hospital, municipal library, well maintained parks, an aquatic centre, arenas, off-leash dog and splash parks. There is a movement in the town to engage youth, with a new community centre for kids and teens offering summer camps and monthly activities for kids of all ages. Downtown Strathmore has all the essential stores and services you'd expect with comprehensive development on both sides of the highway.
Recreation For Strathmore Residents
Minor sports are well organized in Strathmore, with hockey, lacrosse, soccer, baseball and basketball leagues available for kids up to age 18. The UFA Bisons is a midget hockey team that historically does very well in the province and is well supported by the community when it's "Hockey Night in Strathmore." There are a total of 121 kilometres of pathways which wind through Strathmore. Walk, run, jog, rollerblade or bike all over town and discover nature and the surround wetlands with its marsh birds, water fowl and vegetation. Community celebrations every summer include Heritage Days and the infamous Strathmore Rodeo, well attended by all near and far.
Strathmore schools are operated by the Golden Hills School Division. There are three elementary schools, one junior high school, one high school and two Catholic schools.
