Calgary Townhome Market

Future home owners looking for a townhome will find them in every quadrant of Calgary. There are various types of townhomes available, such as:

  • Two-storey attached homes in multi-family developments with and without front drive garages
  • Two and three-storey attached street-facing townhomes with front drive garages
  • Two and three-storey townhomes contained within mid-rise or high-rise condominium buildings

The selection of Calgary townhomes for sale is extensive. Most new townhomes in the downtown core are new, as row housing in Calgary was not popular in the early 20th century. Those older townhomes that remain are refurbished and renovated for commercial purposes. Townhomes really caught on in Calgary in the 1960s and 1970s when multi-family housing was encouraged by city planners. With developers planning more dense communities and constructing with new environmentally friendly materials, townhomes are a very important component of any new neighbourhood currently under construction in Calgary.

Types of Townhomes

Calgary's newest communities in the suburbs have lovely new townhome developments, both in dedicated communities with shared outdoor space and street-facing attached homes. New construction in the city's fringe areas offer townhomes with modern design, such as higher ceilings, open floor plans, the latest in green construction materials and residential technology.

Street-facing townhomes often do not have condo or home-owners associations and each home is regarded as separate and unique despite being attached to another home.

Purchasing a Calgary Townhome

Townhomes are a wonderful alternative to purchasing a single-family home. Home owners have their own front door and don't' need to go through a lobby or take an elevator to their home (unless you are in a condo building townhome). Depending on your model, you can drive right into your own, personal garage where you may also store your patio furniture or bicycles or your kayak in the winter, and your skis or even a snowmobile in the summer. Property taxes can be less than a detached home as well. Some townhomes in Calgary's older communities can be found for under $200,000. The discerning buyer can also find a luxury townhome with a large amount of contemporary living space, tastefully designed with high-end interior finishes for $2 million or more.
