Strathmore Outdoor Adventures

Given that Strathmore is a rural suburban town outside of Calgary, it offers many outdoor adventures for residents and visitors to enjoy. Parks, golf courses, and trails for hiking and biking are just a few options. There's a little something for everyone to enjoy in Strathmore. All it takes is some exploration. Here are some suggestions to get started.

Parks

The Strathmore Parks and Recreation Department maintains the town’s parks, which offer a variety of amenities. Kinsmen Park has walking paths that surround a small lake, a playground, gazebos, and picnic pavilions. Sports lovers can check out Nathan Haase Memorial, which has a baseball diamond and soccer fields. Wildflower Sledding Hill and Dinosaur Sledding Hill are both maintained by Parks and Rec. Parkwood Park is a large and dog-friendly grassy field in central Strathmore.

Water Recreation

Strathmore residents have several ways to enjoy water recreation during the spring and summer months. Lions Splash Park is located on the southwest side of Kinsmen Park. The splash park, open from June 1 to September 1, has picnic tables and public washrooms for guests.

The Strathmore Aquatic Centre has a six-lane, 25-metre lap indoor pool open year-round. Visitors can also check out the kiddie pool, hot tub, and sauna.

Eagle Lake, located just southeast of Strathmore, offers opportunities for boating and fishing. There is a boat launch at the end of Range Road 245 and another one located at the RV Resort. Anglers can fish for burbot, northern pike, and walleye in the lake.

Hiking & Biking Trails

People can hike or bike to Eagle Lake from Strathmore via an access trail. To reach the trailhead, drive south on Slater Way past the recycling center. There's a small parking area on the left. The flat trail is about 10 kilometres long, taking about two hours to hike to Eagle Lake and back.

Elmer and Phyllis Gray Park in Strathmore has a two-kilometre hiking trail that circles a lake. It's an easy trail that takes about 30 minutes to hike. There's also a 1.5-kilometre loop trail around Strathmore Lake. Leashed dogs are welcome on these trails.

Golf Courses

Golfers can find a couple of opportunities to hit the links in Strathmore. The Strathmore Golf Club is a semi-private course, but the general public can book tee times there as well. This 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,813 yards from the longest tees. The course winds through numerous lakes and ponds in northwest Strathmore, which creates interesting water hazards on many of the holes. The club also provides access to a driving range and golf lessons with PGA pros.

The Oxbow Country Golf Course is a fun nine-hole course located off Township Road 244 in northwest Strathmore. This semi-private course has a par of 36 and measures 3,321 yards from the longest tees.

Other Outdoor Activities

Strathmore residents and visitors alike can discover other ways to enjoy the outdoors. Disc golf is fairly popular in Alberta, and there are two 18-hole disc golf courses in Strathmore: the Strathmore Disc Golf Course and the Four Sisters Disc Golf Course. 

The Lions Regional Outdoor Rink, located next to Strathmore High School, offers opportunities for skating and ice hockey in the winter. People can play ball hockey at the rink during the warmer months. 

The Strathmore Skatepark is located outside the Youth Club of Strathmore. It's a small and nicely designed park for skateboarders to practice.

Strathmore Shopping

Strathmore residents can take care of most of their major shopping at the Ranch Market Shopping Centre in the southeast part of town. The major stores include Walmart Supercentre, Sobey's, and Totem Building Supplies. Shoppers can also find a pharmacy, bank branches, gas stations, pet supplies, and a number of smaller service businesses here. 

Another small commercial shopping area in Strathmore is located between 2 Avenue and 4 Avenue, in the blocks between Wheatland Trail and Kinsmen Park. The Strathmore Centre Shopping Mall is located here. It has small, locally owned shops surrounding it, and shoppers can find everything from jewelry and apparel to beauty supplies and a florist.

Strathmore Restaurants

The Trans-Canada Highway runs through Strathmore, so the town sees plenty of tourist traffic passing through on the way to and from Calgary. This extra traffic helps to support a surprising number of restaurants and eateries for a town this size (not to mention tire and auto repair shops). Most of the restaurants are concentrated next to the highway, and there are also quite a few places to eat near the Strathmore Shopping Centre between 2 Avenue and 4 Avenue.

Fast food places are all located near the highway. There are actually three Tim Hortons and a Starbucks next to the highway, in addition to popular favorites like Dairy Queen, A&W, KFC, and McDonald's. The Strathmore Station Restaurant and Pub has a family-friendly menu of burgers, steaks, and pasta and a separate full bar area where the adults can get a drink. There are also a couple of Chinese restaurants on the west side of town next to the highway.

In the area around the Strathmore Centre, diners can find a locally owned Indian restaurant, an ice cream shop, and several small cafés and diners. 

Arts & Culture in Strathmore

Strathmore might be a small town, but it’s certainly not lacking arts and culture. Multiple artists, from visual artists to musicians, actors, and actresses, make their home in Strathmore. Arts and Culture

Explore local arts and culture through Strathmore organizations and community events. The Vault Cultural Collective seeks to combine everything related to arts and culture in the community. The Vault helps to organize the annual Strathmore Performing Arts Festival, a series of local concerts. Free and paid concerts are sponsored by the Vault, as well as art shows, theater performances, and more.

The Hope Bridges Society and the Wheatland Society of the Arts both sponsor regular art classes for aspiring painters, sketch artists, potters, and more.

Rodeo is one of the most popular sports in Alberta and is an important part of the region's cultural heritage. The Strathmore & District Agricultural Society sponsors a rodeo school every year, before the start of the local high school rodeo season.

Strathmore Nightlife

Since Strathmore is a small town, most of the nightlife options are restaurants by day and bars by night, usually with some pool tables and large-screen TVs for sporting events. One of the options includes Branders Lounge, which has pool tables and slot machines. King Eddy Pub on Lakeside Boulevard has a very similar vibe. The Strathmore Roadhouse is known for its great food, but it also has a full bar. 

Strathmore Stampede

The Strathmore Stampede is the third-largest rodeo in Canada and the largest event of the year in Strathmore. It features a four-day rodeo lasting from Friday through Monday, with the championships on the final day. In addition to regular rodeo events and chuckwagon races, the Strathmore Stampede features one of the only Running With the Bulls events in all of Canada, where 70 brave souls race alongside bulls on a track in the arena. The Stampede also has concerts featuring some of the biggest country and western musical acts in North America.
