Public Schools in Strathmore: Golden Hills School Division

The Golden Hills School Division administers the public schools in Strathmore. Although its headquarters are in Strathmore, the district extends from Medicine Hat to the southeast, all the way up north to Trochu Valley. The town of Strathmore has three elementary schools, two K-9 schools, a junior high (grades 7-9), and a high school (10-12). The public schools in the town are as follows:

  • Brentwood Elementary School (K to 6)
  • Westmount Elementary School (K to 6)
  • Wheatland Elementary School (Pre-K to 6)
  • George Freeman School (K to 9)
  • Trinity Christian Academy (K to 9)
  • Crowther Memorial Junior High (7 to 9)
  • Strathmore High School (10 to 12)

Trinity Christian Academy is a Protestant Christian school, but it receives public funding from the Golden Hills School Division. Families pay an additional fee each year for the faith-based curriculum and materials.

Crowther Junior High works to promote an active lifestyle for all students. Students in 7th grade start each year with a two-day camping trip on the shores of Sylvan Lake, which is about 200 kilometres north of Strathmore. Eighth graders choose between alpine and Nordic skiing at the Nakiska Ski Resort or indoor fitness activities at the Repsol Center in Calgary. Finally, 9th graders take a weeklong trip to Eastern Canada, where they visit Toronto, Niagara Falls, Quebec, Ottawa, and other cities.

Strathmore High School provides several ways for students to prepare for college or a career after graduation. Students can earn some credits for on-the-job work experience, for example. There's also a Registered Apprenticeship Program, as well as a green certificate for students who hope to pursue a career in agribusiness. Seniors can take dual enrollment credits from Lethbridge College and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Most of the colleges and universities in Alberta send representatives to Strathmore High School each year for an open house program where students can decide which colleges they'd like to apply to.

Catholic Schools in Strathmore

There are two public Catholic schools in Strathmore, located in the same neighbourhood in the south-central part of town.

Sacred Heart Academy serves students from early childhood (Pre-K) through 6th grade. Religious education, technology, and music are heavily emphasized at the school. It also has a gifted and talented program. Sacred Heart's Readers and Writers Workshop focuses on literacy, including early reading intervention, to better prepare students for high school and beyond.

Holy Cross Collegiate serves Catholic students between grades 7 and 12. Sports offered at Holy Cross include volleyball, basketball, track and field, golf, and cross country. High school students can earn work experience credits that count toward graduation or sign up for the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) for experience in skilled trades and technology.

Strathmore Alternative Schools

There are three alternative schools available in Strathmore. 

The Golden Hills Learning Academy assists families that choose online learning or homeschooling for students between kindergarten and 12th grade. It helps with parent-led homeschooling or a blended program, in which certain courses are taught by a parent and others are taught by a teacher. High school students can earn dual credits through Lethbridge College or Olds College of Agriculture and Technology.

The Golden Hills International School provides both homestay and dormitory living for international exchange students in grades 7 through 12. This school provides a way for students from around the globe to experience Canadian education and hospitality up close.

The Strathmore Storefront School provides one-on-one education, tutoring services, and small group classes to help meet the individual needs of students. It serves both high school students and adult learners.

Colleges & Universities Near Strathmore

There are currently no college options available in Strathmore itself. College and university students who live in town typically commute to Calgary for post-secondary courses. Here are a few of the options that are closest to Strathmore. Most of the colleges also offer online coursework for those who don't want to make the drive every day. 

Sundance College in East Calgary offers a variety of professional diploma programs in fields like business, health, social services, legal assistance, and technology. These are 43-week programs that prepare students for entry into specific skilled trades.

The South Campus of Bow Valley College is located in downtown Calgary. About 17,000 students attend the school each year for professional degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and post-graduate degrees. The main academic areas at Bow Valley College include business, community studies, entertainment arts, health and wellness, and technology.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in the Hillhurst neighbourhood was the first publicly funded technical institute to open in Canada. It offers more than 100 career programs in business, technology, and healthcare and has an annual enrollment of about 14,000 students.
