Rec Centers & Fitness in Chestermere

Nestled amidst Alberta's picturesque landscapes just 20 kilometres east of Downtown Calgary, Chestermere stands as a testament to balanced living. For those who call it home, it's not just about finding a place to rest one's head, but also discovering avenues to rejuvenate the body and spirit. And what better way to achieve this equilibrium than embracing fitness? In the city of Chestermere, opportunities to engage in active pursuits are as diverse as they are abundant.

Chestermere Bike Park

The Chestermere Bike Park is a large outdoor park for racing, BMX cycling, and practicing mountain biking skills. There is a seating area near the entrance for those who want to sit and watch the cycling action.

The park’s northside includes downhill flow trails; these one-way trails take off from the starting mound and feature a variety of hills, jumps, and drops. The flow trails range from beginner to advanced in difficulty.

A skills loop includes a space for cyclists to practice if they are not ready for the flow trails. The park, located in the Rainbow Falls neighbourhood, also has a pump track for developing riding techniques and a multi-use trail running through the middle. The bike park stays closed for winter.

Chestermere Rec Centre

Stay Active at Chestermere's Rec Centre

The Chestermere Rec Centre is a large facility with fitness activities for all ages. The Rec Centre's grounds are very accessible to residents living in the Westmere neighbourhood and Chestermere’s waterfront homes along the western shore of Lake Chestermere. A membership to the Rec Centre is $85.50 per year, making this a very affordable option for a year-round indoor and outdoor fitness facility.

Chestermere Rec Centre includes outdoor sports opportunities like three regulation-sized softball fields, four fenced-in soccer fields, and a community playground. There is also a large, wide-open field of grass for people to use for any other sports they'd like, a horseback riding corral, and a community playground.

Inside the Rec Centre, enjoy two ice rinks for hockey, ringette, and figure skating, as well as a three-sheet curling rink that offers league play, bonspiels, fun spiels, and group play. Skating lessons and public skate times are available. The Chestermere Whitecappers Association meets regularly for sports like pickleball and other events at the Rec Centre.

Western Headworks Canal Pathway

People can hop on a bike and cycle from the south side of Lake Chestermere to the Max Bell Centre in Calgary using the Western Headworks Canal Pathway. This paved pathway is mostly flat and stretches almost 25 kilometres from end to end.

The Western Headworks Canal is an irrigation canal that runs from Calgary to Chestermere Lake and on to Brooks, Alberta. The pathway used to be an old service road, but now it is open to the public for multi-use.

It can take around two hours for a cyclist to travel the pathway from Chestermere to the Max Bell Centre (one way) in Calgary’s Radisson Heights neighbourhood. On the other hand, hiking the path is considered a moderate challenge due to the distance. It can take a little over five-and-a-half hours to complete the journey on foot. Leashed dogs are allowed to accompany their owners on the trail.

There are multiple access points for the pathway located on smartphone maps. Additionally, there is plenty of signage at all official access points. During the winter months, the path is suitable for cross-country skiing.
