Airdrie was a railway town for many years until Highway 2, now the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, was twinned. Nose Creek runs through Airdrie, a storied water-way which developers have incorporated into natural preserves throughout the city.
Downtown Airdrie offers a library, the historic Roxy Theatre and festival space as the city places great emphasis on a vibrant arts community. In addition to the quaint shops downtown, Airdrie has many shopping centres and a full complement of medical services, dentists, physiotherapists and chiropractors. The Didsbury Hospital is 15 minutes north of Airdrie and there are shorter wait times there than at similar facilities in Calgary.
