Throughout Killarney you'll find many bungalows, ranches and older-styled homes that date back more than 100 years. These were the original backbone on which the community of Killarney was established in 1910. The revitalization project that sought to modernize the area without harming its cultural legacy began in 2002, and this led to a number of improvements in real estate value and in home choice for buyers. This project specifically set out to match new buildings with existing infrastructure and planned commercial development.
Killarney is bordered to the north by 17 Avenue, by Richmond Road to the south, 37 Street on the west and 25a Street on the east.
Traditionally, Killarney was predominantly made up of single-family dwellings. There has been, however, a push in more recent developments towards establishing a number of apartment blocks condominium buildings, and townhouse properties. To this end, almost half of all Killarney homes for sale are now apartments or condos. A large percentage of the homes are single-family dwellings, and the remainder is mostly comprised of semi-detached properties and townhomes. This mix of housing styles gives buyers a considerable amount of choice, and has led to Killarney being one of the more popular communities in Calgary.
Killarney Neighbourhood Amenities
The area is well provided for in terms of shopping amenities. The Westhills Shopping Centre and Richmond Square are both popular shopping destinations while 37 Street is home to numerous specially stores. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the wide range of sports and athletic facilities provided. Hiking trails and pathways are available in a number of locations, and Edworthy Park in the northwest part of the area is always particularly popular. In fact home buyers of all types will find something to love about Killarney.
Families purchasing a home in Killarney will be happy to hear that there are two schools within the community's boundary including Holy Name Elementary School and Killarney Elementary School. As well, there are a number of schools that cover elementary to high school in neighbouring areas and communities. This is important to many of the residents of Killarney, since approximately half of all residents are between the ages of 25 and 44, which means there are a lot of families with young children in the area.
